By Vincent Van Gonad (Ralph Scoville)

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Morris Women’s Rugby hosted Crafts and Drafts at the the Dover Moose Lodge, a sweetheart edition of Painting 101. What better way to express your feelings to that special person in your life, than by creating a custom artwork, inspired by your partner’s inner beauty. The theme was 2 lovebirds sitting in a tree, ensconced by a heart-shaped moon.

When I first heard of this event, I of course thought of Al Capone and the St. Valentine’s Day massacre. Luckily, we were in Dover, NJ and not Chicago, so only his erstwhile cousin, Al Mascarpone, was able to attend. He was not there to shoot people up, only to jack up their cholesterol levels through the consumption of fatty cheese.

With wine and beer provided by our hosts (I use the term beer loosely as it was only a well-known Lite Beer), a room full of painters would set forth to create their own set of lovebirds. 2 hours later, we were done.

For some, it was almost as if James Moser and Jonathan Scoville were looking down on them and providing heavenly guidance. For others, well, the lovebirds would be easily confused for a Rorschach test.

In the end, it really didn’t matter. It was a room full of artists drawing upon their inner Grandma Moses to create a statement of love for someone. Allegedly, many of these artists would return home and continue the artistic expression in the sanctity of their homes.

In the end, it all circles back to the fact that an alternate method to say “I Love You” to your partner, is merely to say “I play for Morris Rugby”.
