Base Camp Participates in NEW Tournament!
November 4, 2017
Jurie Swart of the Marlton Rugby Football Club had a vision to hold a flag rugby tournament in South Jersey in November of 2018. After much success with 2 clinic type sessions, his players were ready to play games. So he contacted teams from Northern and Central New Jersey and newly formed teams from the Philadelphia area.
Well as the saying goes, “build it and they will come”. The teams Yardley Makefield, Kingsessing, Road Runners, Base Camp Rugby affiliated with Morris Rugby, Princeton, Jersey Shore and the Tomahawks all took to the highways and made their way down south.
Jurie was especially thankful to the Andy Anderson, Treasurer South Jersey Olde Guarde and Adam Zuckerman of the South Jersey Men’s club who handled coordinating the referees.
This tournament was the first large scale flag tournament that took place in NJ outside of the summer months. The success of the tournament says it all. Children and their parents are interested in playing flag rugby.
Nick Hunter of the Roadrunners found this tournament was huge for the Roadrunners. Many of our kids had never been outside of Southwest Philly before, much less to South Jersey! They felt welcome, excited, and really liked meeting new kids and learning their new sport. The referees were fantastic and coaxed the kids into reminders of the rules and positive effort! We can’t thank you enough for a wonderful tournament; the boys (and girl) later trekked to Penn and were the official water runners for our game v Cornell. They literally can’t shut up about rugby now!
Congratulations on all those involved! Your efforts have made a difference!
